Description:
The Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto invites applications for the Irene Frances Breen Chair in Hemorrhagic Stroke. The Chair term is five years, renewable once for a second five-year term contingent upon successful performance review. The successful applicant must (a) hold or be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto, Department of Medicine, and (b) hold or be eligible to hold a clinician investigator or clinician scientist position based at University Health Network (UHN). The appointment and re-appointment process of the Chair will follow the University of Toronto Policy and Procedures for Academic Appointments, and the University Policy on Endowed and Limited Term Chairs, Professorships, Distinguished Scholars and Program Initiatives.
The successful candidate must hold a MD degree, hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), hold certification in Neurology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or international equivalent, and have completed a fellowship in stroke neurology or neurovascular disorders.
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake collaborative research and promote discovery, treatment, and education in hemorrhagic stroke. The successful candidate will have an established reputation of clinical expertise and be an internationally renowned scientist or investigator, with a track record of conducting high quality innovative and impactful research in early detection of risk & mitigating / altering risk to prevent hemorrhagic stroke; and the treatment for hemorrhagic stroke including acute treatments (surgical or pharmacological) along with exploring the possibility of other recovery options and rehabilitation to minimize the effects of hemorrhagic stroke. The Chair will leverage all enabling tools to advance the area (e.g. artificial intelligence), as tools may evolve over time, and will also ensure knowledge translation efforts are integrated into the work. Through research and scholarly activities, the Chairholder will help position the University of Toronto as a global leader in knowledge generation and translation in the area of hemorrhagic stroke. Additional duties will include teaching and supervision of medical trainees and graduate students. Excellent collaboration, communication, and leadership skills, with demonstrated experience are essential.
Clinical activities will be negotiated with the relevant Department and Division heads. This inaugural Chair role will provide approximately $50,000 to $85,000 per year for 5 years, which will be used to offset salary support of the incumbent. Additional funds are expected to support the academic activities and/or interests of the incumbent, which may include research operations and education events.
