The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and the Division of Cardiology of the University Health Network (UHN) and Sinai Health System (SHS) are seeking to recruit an academic cardiologist in the area of Echocardiography. The successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the University of Toronto as a Clinician Investigator at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026, or as mutually agreed upon.
The echocardiography laboratory runs a busy program with >35,000 echocardiography studies (inpatients and outpatients) per year that includes a breath of pathologies ranging from valvular heart disease, genetic and infiltrative cardiomyopathies, patients receiving cancer therapy, advanced cardiac support devices (e.g., LVADs, ECMO), congenital heart disease, etc. The laboratory supports the University Health Network and the community. The laboratory consists of 17 faculty readers and over 50 sonographers. It is a multivendor laboratory. The program has an active research portfolio. It supports 3-5 advanced imaging fellows per year and has a strong educational footprint.The primary goal of this recruitment is to participate and enrich the educational and scholarly achievements of the Echocardiography Program.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated academic productivity or potential in the field of echocardiography – through research and/or educational initiatives. They will have completed a level 3 fellowship in echocardiography – with skill acquisition in advanced echocardiography including contrast, stress, strain, structural imaging and support, transesophageal and 3-D imaging. The clinical position involves the interpretation of both inpatient and outpatient transthoracic and stress imaging (treadmill, bike and pharmacologic); as well as the performance of transesophageal echocardiography. The laboratory also provides educational rotations for the cardiology residents at the University of Toronto as well as a level 3 echocardiography fellowship.
Preference will be given to applicants with an academic and research focus aligned with the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre priority areas such as structural valve disease, heart function, cardio-oncology, adult congenital heart disease and/or artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will help to advance technical developments in echocardiography and/or use echocardiographic data to address knowledge gaps and/or help promote education in echocardiography using novel approaches.
The successful candidate will report to the Division Director of Cardiology at UHN/SHS. Candidates must hold an MD degree or equivalent and should have, or be eligible for, certification in Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). The primary language of work will be English. Compensation will depend on the amount of clinical work performed (estimated based on fee for service billing), but will be in the usual range for an experienced academic Cardiologist in the Province of Ontario, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Health benefit options and plans are supplied per institutional policy. In addition, the candidate may be reimbursed partial start-up costs for office expenses.
