About the Ventures & Ecosystems

This role resides within the V&E group at MaRS. V&E works with over 1400 innovation-driven science and technology startups. V&E helps entrepreneurs commercialize innovations with high business growth potential in Canada and globally by facilitating access to the customer, talent, funding, marketing and stakeholder connections required to successfully scale their business.

About the Position

The role of Data Analyst requires the collection of data through various channels (by running surveys, web-scraping etc), consuming data from third-party sources and in-depth knowledge on cleaning and processing augmented data. The Data Analyst must utilize or create best practices for analyzing, validating, and reporting and be able to clearly articulate the methodologies that were employed in their calculations. The Data Analyst will also identify trends in the data and communicate them to stakeholders through visualizations, reports, and presentation decks

This role is a 12-month contract.

Key Responsibilities

  • Database Management and Organization
    • Practice good data hygiene and look for areas to improve data hygiene to support smooth operations and processes, more comprehensive data analysis, and facilitate data privacy and governance best practices.
    • Documentation of queries and code, methodologies, that are used for key and re-occurring metrics.
    • Ingest proprietary data collected from surveys along with third party data into data warehouse and augment to existing data sets
  • Data Collection
    • Conduct end-to-end venture data collection by building and hosting surveys for MaRS and other Innovation Hub ventures, scraping data from websites, cleaning and processing third-party venture data using advanced SQL queries and Python for reporting to the Federal/ Provincial Government, internal stakeholders, or other designated organizations.
    • Support the automation of routine tasks such as translation of data from one file format to another, currency conversions, and building dashboards containing regularly requested data.
  • Data Analysis
    • Leverage SQL and Python for data cleaning, data manipulation, data augmentation
    • High level statistical analysis of data to obtain key metrics and reporting numbers
    • Creation of data visualizations in Tableau, Excel, Google Sheets
    • Identify data points of interest for stakeholders

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s level, Technical/academic/vocational training and/or equivalent work experience. Relevant areas: Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Economics. A Master's degree in the same relevant areas is an asset.
  • 1+ years working in a data-specific analytics capacity
  • 1+ years working in a role requiring data collection & cleaning (surveys, web scraping, third party data downloads)
    • 1+ years supporting the development of data products or dashboards
    • Experience leading data collection exercises or cleaning and organizing data warehouse, an asset
    • Relational Database, SQL/PostgreSQL – querying, joins, materialized views
    • Analytical Programming Language (Python)
    • Version Control (git, GitHub)
    • Data Visualization Software (PowerBI, Tableau, Looker etc.)
    • Basic Statistical Analysis (summary statistics)
    • Basic knowledge of data confidentiality & governance best practices
      • Stakeholder management skills

      Salary Range: $60,000 - $76,000, extended healthcare benefits, lifestyle spending account, and paid time-off.
