CAPITAL SPECIALIST

INVEST OTTAWA – VENTURE DEVELOPMENT

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Accelerator Programs & Investor Relations , you will equip and empower our technology clients to raise funding and achieve key business goals. How? You will foster relationships with angel investors, venture capitalists, and associated investor networks and associations; coordinate events and workshops; develop content on investment trends and deal flow; and provide curated, white-glove support to select firms in the Venture Path portfolio. You’ll also support the deployment of non-dilutive, non-repayable grant funding to startups through a combination of competitions and events.

Within this role, you will collaborate with fellow Venture Development staff who run structured programs and deliver market insights; external clients including founders, entrepreneurs, startups and scale-up firms supported by Invest Ottawa; and external investors such as angel investors and venture capitalists.

• 10 days per month required in the office at Bayview Yards and Area X.O
• Anticipated start date for this role is April 2025

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

• Build and maintain strong relationships with angel investors, venture capitalists, and investment organizations and associations through a combination of cold outreach and participation in networking events;
• Track investor records and preferences in CRM system;
• Provide curated warm connections between client companies and relevant investors;
• Conduct investment research and analysis, using leading-edge investment databases and AI tools;
• Help to assess the current investment-readiness of client companies by gathering background information from the firm and/or the Invest Ottawa team;
• Support the development of fact sheets and investment memos for companies pursuing investment and contribute to the refinement of pitch decks;
• Contribute to the organization and execution of investment matchmaking events, funding competitions, and educational workshops;
• Contribute to structured investment-readiness programs, such as the Immigrant Founder Launchpad, which prepares early-stage companies to raise pre-seed/seed investment;
• Support the deployment of non-dilutive, non-repayable microgrant funding awards, including coordination of application processes, evaluation committees, client communications, and assisting with reporting and claim requirements;

WHAT YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED/GAINED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER:

• Post-secondary education in business or a related field, complemented by 1-3 years of experience in a business environment.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including skill in fostering cross-functional team collaboration to achieve goals and proven strength building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders.
• Superb communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Highly organized and adept at prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment with sharp attention to detail.
• Self-motivated and proactive, with a strong drive to take initiative and achieve results.
• Ideal candidate will have a proven track record in deploying programs and/or services for technology companies
• Prior experience and/or knowledge of early-stage venture investment (angel investment, venture capital) highly desired.
• Demonstrated interest/passion for the investment space, particularly regarding funding of early-stage technology businesses.
