The Duke School of Medicine’s Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities & History of Medicine was founded in 1999 with the mission to develop interdisciplinary educational and research programs in clinical and research ethics, the history of medicine, and the social and cultural aspects of medicine. With over 30 core faculty and faculty associates from across Duke University, its programs and educational offerings are designed for medical students, residents, researchers, faculty and staff in the School of Medicine. In addition, The Trent Center holds annually a number of endowed lectures for both the Duke community and the general public.
Occupational Summary:
Collaborate with Trent Center Director on strategic planning, programming, and development; Ensure effective implementation, administration and communication of Trent Center activities.
Work Performed:
Coordinate and participate in strategic planning efforts with Center Director and faculty to determine Center goals, objectives, and plans for ongoing programs. Play a leadership role in the design and management of new initiatives special projects.
Work with Center Director on faculty recruitment and identification of faculty associates. Establish and maintain working relationships with faculty and staff across Duke to foster collaborative educational and research efforts.
Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with Medical Center Development office and current donors. Seek opportunities to increase financial support for new initiatives. Prepare proposals and materials to present to potential donors.
Direct communications efforts to ensure that the Center’s mission, events and achievements are effectively communicated: includes preparation of annual reports, newsletters, and promotional materials, as well as website development. Develop and maintain relationships with Duke communicators network and public relations offices to coordinate and disseminate relevant information.
Serve as Business Manager for the Center. Prepare Center budgets and determine fiscal requirements on both a short and long-range basis. Oversee development of grant proposals and monitoring of successful grants. Prepare operational and financial reports with analyses, and propose recommendations, as needed. Maintain interface between Center, School of Medicine Office of Finance and Resource Planning and other University entities to coordinate operational activities regarding finances, human resource issues, space and facilities.
Oversee the planning and implementation of public events and educational programs for medical and interprofessional students, residents and faculty including: Trent Center Armstrong Scholars Program and medical student electives, Clinical Ethics and Bioethics faculty programs, Humanities in Medicine Lecture Series, endowed public lectureships, workshops and conferences.
Supervise and coordinate work of designated program and administrative employees; manage personnel activities to meet Center needs. Provide ongoing guidance and conduct annual reviews.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
Work requires a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree; Master’s or advanced degree preferred
Experience
Work requires a minimum of eight years of experience with progressively increasing responsibilities in financial administration, program planning and communications in, or applicable to, an academic setting.
OR AN EQUIVAMENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires a general business back ground generally equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a business related field.
Experience
Work requires 4 years related business or administrative experience to EXPERIENCE OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR functions. acquire competence in applying general personnel practices, accounting and budgeting principles and coordination of major administrative A master's degree in a business related field may be substituted for 2 years experience.
