The Office of Emergency Management for the City of Georgetown is offering one paid internship position to help support Geographic Information System (GIS) projects, plan development, special event support, outreach and/or specialized professional level administrative support tasks. Tasks will also include a focus on interdepartmental projects including further development of a critical infrastructure database, vulnerability assessments, and set up of one or more emergency management ArcGIS Solutions. This position will work closely with emergency management personnel and the City’s GIS staff on these projects.

This internship will provide opportunities to build/expand the candidates network and participate in local and regional emergency management workshops and meetings.

Student intern would be working primarily in an office environment under the supervision of the City’s Emergency Management Coordinator. While the internship period is flexible, the anticipated start date is early June 2025, with an anticipated end date in mid-September 2025. The successful intern will work 24 hours (three days) per week, but hours are flexible.

Examples of duties:

  • Collects raw data and builds a GIS system compatible database

  • Creates and completes analytics on multiple databases in relation to emergency management and public safety

  • Liaisons with both the Office of Emergency Management and the GIS Team

  • Works on and manages assigned preparedness projects

  • Effectively organizes and prioritizes multiple assignments and projects

  • Makes both formal and informal presentation to staff members, officials, and the general public

  • Maintains current knowledge of city administrative procedures

  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Training:

  • Degree (or working towards a degree) in Geography, GIS, Emergency Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.

  • Relevant coursework in GIS, spatial analysis, emergency management, disaster response, etc.

  • Any relevant GIS/EM certifications (GISP, etc.)

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficiency in GIS software Specifically ESRI’s ArcGIS platforms. Expertise with ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, Spatial Analyst, and ArcGIS Online are preferred/favored.

  • Knowledge of spatial analysis techniques and tools. Familiarity with importing/exporting GIS Data.

  • Familiarity with emergency management principles and protocols.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team.

  • Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

  • Time management and organizational skills.

  • Using independent judgment in achieving assigned objectives

  • Accurately recording and maintaining records.

Relevant Experience:

  • Internships, volunteer work, or academic projects related to GIS and/or emergency management.

  • Any experience working with emergency response teams, disaster relief organizations, or government agencies.

  • Projects involving data collection, mapping, spatial analysis, or emergency planning.

Work Schedule:

  • The internship will consist of 24 hours (three days) per week.

  • Start date of the internship is anticipated to be June 9, 2025, extending through September 12, 2025, but remains flexible.

  • Deadlines and schedules will be developed with the student and supervisor.

  • Dependable transportation needed.

CERTIFICATION(S)/LICENSES REQUIRED:

Valid Class C Texas Drivers license.

EMPLOYMENT TESTING:
Employment is contingent on passing post-offer, pre-employment drug testing, criminal background investigation and driving record check.

HIRING RANGE: $15.00 hourly.
