Assists with Library Operations, providing general assistance to patrons and facilitating a major function of library service such as coordinating the Library’s Volunteer program, serving as the primary driver and facilitator for WOW Bookmobile Service, leading the Library’s early literacy Storytime program, or facilitating the provision of offsite Library materials access via automated reserves pickup lockers or other offsite reserves pickup and returns systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages and coordinates a major Library program or service such as:

    • The Library’s Volunteer program, including recruiting and managing up to 100 volunteers.

    • The Library’s WOW Bookmobile Service, including managing routes, logistics, and maintenance of a large, specialized vehicle.

    • Planning and leading the Library’s early literacy Storytime programs for young children and their caregivers.

    • Managing offsite reserves pickup service and planning and facilitating outreach initiatives to encourage community use of offsite materials access.

  • Assists Library patrons at service points with book returns and checkouts, payment of fines, and completing Library card applications and hold request forms, location of materials, and information.

  • Organizes books into their Dewey number and shelves them properly.

  • Maintains the order, cleanliness, and safety of Library areas and holdings.

  • Opens and prepares Library common areas, computers, office equipment and other search tools.

  • Maintains statistics of usage relevant to assigned service area and program.

  • Answers the telephone, troubleshoots user concerns, and refers calls to the appropriate section.

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages an automated library locker system:

    • Stock, assign users, and retrieve items not picked up

    • Troubleshoot software and mechanical issues with the locker system

  • Retrieve returned materials from offsite book return bin

  • Register new and assist new and existing cardholders with the use of the Library’s catalog and reservation system and other account management features

  • Process reserved materials to deliver to an offsite pickup location

  • Develop and implement a promotional plan for GPLExpress Service

  • Work closely with community partners to ensure the success of the GPLExpress program

  • Engage in Outreach activities in the neighborhood surrounding the GPLExpress Service Lockers and Book Return in order to recruit users for the service

  • As a member of the Library Outreach Team, assist with citywide Outreach services and events as necessary

  • Drives a specialized City vehicle to deliver and retrieve Library materials from GPLExpress station

  • May operate the Library WOW! Bookmobile if necessary

  • Work primarily independently, setting priorities and managing time efficiently

  • Maintain usage statistics for grant reporting purposes

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, training and Experience Guidelines

High school diploma or equivalent plus two (2) years of experience related to customer service or library services. OR Any equivalent combination of related experience or education.

Knowledge of:

  • Library administration, organization, and operation.

  • Library reference resources.

  • Customer service methods and techniques.

  • Cash Handling procedures.

  • Basic leadership and training techniques.

Skill in:

  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Resolving customer complaints and concerns.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Working with adults and children.

  • Reading reports, memoranda, periodicals, journals, etc.

  • Filling out forms; taking messages.

  • Performing basic math calculations.

  • Responding to request for information.

  • Using the computer and various software programs.

  • Training volunteers and staff.

  • Coordinating the maintenance of equipment as needed.

  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. Push and pull Library book carts loaded with up to 300 lbs of materials in outdoor conditions including inclined ramps. Operate large vehicle, automated lift, and locking system to secure carts for transit

Hiring Range: $19.29 - $24.17, hourly.
